Teachers' Day In India


Teachers' Day is celebrated on 5th September as a mark of tribute to the contribution made by teachers to the society. Teacher's Day is marked in honour of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on September 5, 1888. Dr Radhakrishnan was India's first vice president and second president. He was a great scholar, philosopher and Bharat Ratna recipient.

About Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan


Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888 at Tiruttani in Tamil Nadu, India. His father was Sarvepalli Veeraswami and his mother was Sitamma. His wife was Sivakamu and he was the father of five daughters and one son. He joined Voorhees College in Vellore but after that, he moved to the Madras Christian College at the age of 17. In 1906, he had completed his Master's degree in Philosophy and became the professor.

In 1952, he became the first Vice President of Independent India and in 1962, he became the second President of India. He was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1952. His written works include Indian Philosophy, (two volumes, 1923–27), The Philosophy of the Upanishads (1924), An Idealist View of Life (1932), and Eastern Religions and Western Thought (1939). He was nominated 16 times for the Nobel Prize in literature, and 11 times for the Nobel Peace Prize. He died on 17 April 1975 (aged 86) in Madras, Tamil Nadu. Since 1962, Teachers' Day in India is celebrated on 5 September every year to pay tribute to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on his birth anniversary.

Importance of Teachers' Day


Teachers play an important role in our life to become successful in career and business. A good teacher helps us to become a good human being in society and a good citizen of the country. One of the biggest roles a teacher may have is that of a mentor. On 5th September, the students show their gratitude for the contribution of teachers in making them a better human each day and express their respect and love for teachers.

Teacher’s Day is celebrated in schools, colleges, universities and educational institutions of India. On this day students do some performances, dances, skits and host elaborate shows for their beloved teachers.
